Nicolas Soulatre is a French-Spanish composer specializing in music for film and visual media. He was awarded the WDR Filmscore Award at Cologne Soundtrack 2026 for his score to Fake News, a short film directed by David Seul. The jury praised "the unique instrumentation, the strong use of leitmotifs, and the excellent understanding of dramaturgy," adding that "the score made the severity of the topic of fake news tangible, and the combination of orchestral and electronic sounds created an interesting musical language."
Music in Service of the Story
Drawing inspiration from the worlds of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mica Levi, Wim Mertens and Aphex Twin, as well as Latin music and minimalist aesthetics, Nicolas approaches each film as a unique territory to explore. He takes the time to discover the rhythm, sonic palette and instrumentation that best serve the narrative and its dramatic arc. His work draws from a wide range of influences—from electronic music and minimalism to jazz, Latin music, indie rock and contemporary classical music—to develop a distinctive and ever-evolving musical language.
Also working as a sound engineer, music producer and sound designer, Nicolas sees technical expertise as an extension of the creative process. His expertise in music production allows him to deliver polished demos and refined mixes, giving filmmakers a clear and faithful representation of the musical direction from the earliest stages of collaboration.
Between Stage and Studio
Alongside his work as a composer, Nicolas performs live as a keyboardist. He has collaborated—and continues to collaborate—with bands including Bantam Lyons, The Lightning Year, La Houle, Barbara Rivage, Championne and Lafrange. His experience on stage continues to shape his musical approach, fostering a deep sensitivity to dynamics, attentive listening and a collaborative creative mindset.
al varea – Sonic Exploration
Nicolas also develops al varea, an improvised live electronic music project exploring immersive and introspective sound worlds at the crossroads of ambient, krautrock and electronica. This ongoing artistic exploration continually feeds back into his work as a composer, enriching his musical language and expanding his sonic palette.
